So, we've just held a special coffee morning to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
It's one of their big fund-raisers and we were only too happy to help. Here's how it goes with the coffee and cakes.
Loose Debra has lots of post-mastectomy followers as well as women interested in avoiding breast cancer which spurred us on to do it.
However, I personally, always get disgruntled when cancer charities promote unhealthy eating because there is a link between a rise in glucose levels and cancer. For example, when I saw the latest marketing campaign by Cancer Research UK 'Sprinkles Kill Cancer' at my bus stop, I felt confused.
It's ironic and disconcerting when cancer charities encourage sugary events... even if an occasional sugar binge doesn't directly cause cancer, the glucose-cancer link is proven which makes it a little tricky promoting unhealthy eating and disease support at the same event!
So, we offered some health-enhancing options for our morning, which included the Gluten and Dairy-free Carrot Cake by 'The Haven in Your Kitchen' (a great book for healthy recipes); Full of Goodness Fudgey Brownies by Mummy Tries; and Raw Mango Sunshine Cake by Wellness With Mamma Jones and, despite this cake looking a bit like hummus,...everybody liked them :-)
We were lucky with the weather and there was great energy at the coffee morning: we raised over £100. We also played a game which led to the launch of the Debra Speed Challenge (videos of people taking their bras off as quickly as possible and donating to our Just Giving page for Macmillan), so our fund-raising total continues to increase, and another Loose Debra follower showcased her no bra top design! We look forward to writing more on both these topics in next month's blogs :-)
