Meet Loose Debra fan Maya, 17, from Brighton. Maya recently attended our coffee morning for Macmillan wearing one of her handmade, own-design, bra-free halter tops. We were very impressed by the practical simplicity and trendy style of Maya's design, not to mention the bra-freedom they give the wearer.
Maya and her friend Georgia totally rocked the tops, and we wanted to know how Maya made them and, of course always greedy for bra-free style, how to get our hands on one.
Maya, who has a Saturday job in a fabric shop, told us, "My inspiration to make them was pretty basic - I wanted to replicate some of the tops in American Apparel that are really pricey, by using the remnants that I pick up from work for next to nothing. After making the first one I realised that it looked great and was more comfortable without a bra. A friend borrowed one and she was amazed at how confident she felt wearing it bra-free. Since then I've made a few of them for friends, who wear them all the time without bras and look great. They take about forty minutes to make, and I spend my Saturdays at work assessing which off-cuts would work best!"
Not only do these tops look the business then, but they are also eco-friendly, being the result of using off-cuts that may otherwise be wasted. We are little short of obsessed.
I'm asking Maya to make me a bra-free halter top, as we are apparently in for an Indian Summer, and am magnanimously sharing the details for ordering here too! Maya will make you a top (all different patterns and colours, but 'pot-luck' is her favourite!) for £14.99 if you'd like to drop her a line at firstname.lastname@example.org. So... step back from the window at American Apparel... and get your bra-free, environmentally friendly orders in :-)
